Arizona
Arizona is rich with model railroad ideas. Monument Valley, below, in the northeastern part of the state is famous for its Hollywood Western films.

Arizona is also home to the Barringer Meteorite Crater (below). Better known simply as “Meteor Crater,” it’s a gigantic hole in the middle of the high plains of the Colorado Plateau.

But the Grand Canyon (below), carved by the Colorado River, is probably the most famous natural resource in the state.
Can you picture that overlook on a model railroad? Can you picture standing there at the edge? Yikes!
Despite appearances, mountains and plateaus are found in more than half of the state. I was snowed-in in Flagstaff years ago, back when I didn’t even know that was possible in Arizona. In fact, despite the state’s reputation for deserts, 27 percent of Arizona is forest, and the largest stand of Ponderosa pine trees in the world is in Arizona.
Arizona is a great source for scenery ideas. Enjoy these great pictures from Ken Heyl.
