Mackinac Island, Michigan
If you’ve ever seen the 1980 movie Somewhere in Time you have a hint of the essence of Mackinac Island, Michigan. There are no cars on the island. No traffic! No smog either. And no city noise. Just clean air. Clean, clear, cold water. Bicycles.
And the sound of hundreds of horses clip-clopping everywhere (www.mict.com and www.mackinachorses.org)
More than any other place I’ve been, Mackinac Island as close as you can come to stepping back in time.
For a guy searching for scenery ideas, this is a great spot. If I had the skills to model the whole island, I would. Imagine some steam locomotives and some great old rolling stock among the buildings and the beautiful countryside. Of course, that’s blasphemy on this island. But on a layout, wow!
